Abstract
<PICT:0833411/III/1> <PICT:0833411/III/2> In producing carbon black by introducing hydrocarbon to be decomposed into the upstream end of a furnace 1 through which a stream of blast flame gases flows longitudinally, the hydrocarbon is introduced as a plurality of symmetrically positioned expanding gas-atomized liquid sprays 18 so directed that the axes of symmetry of the sprays converge at a downstream point lying on the longitudinal axis of the furnace and form angle 15-45 degrees with the furnace axis. The velocity of the sprays must be greater, e.g. 10-25 times, that of the flame gases, e.g. 2000-8000 ft./min., so that they are not deflected from their directed course before the hydrocarbon is vaporized. The blast flame gases are produced by introducing fuel through speeds 22 from header 23, and air, under pressure through windbox 6 from 7. The mixture enters furnace 1, which has refractory and heat insulation 2 enclosed in metal shell 3, through symmetrically and uniformly arranged blast ports 8 in burner block 5; 2, 3 or 4 symmetrically arranged spray injectors 9 provide sprays 18 having an angle of spread of 15 degrees. Air, which may be preheated, or steam under pressure enter through 13, Fig. 2, and flowing through Venturi 15 draw in oil from 10 and chamber 11 through passage 16. The oil is thus, preferably, suspended in the atomizing gas outside the furnace and 100-150 cu. ft. of gas may be used per gallon of oil. The suspension passes through pipe 17 which may have water-cooling jacket 19. Specification 652,518 is referred to.
