Abstract

<PICT:0833126/IV (a)/1> Thermoplastic tapes of various cross-sections are made by a process comprising, as essential steps in sequence, the localized coagulation of a latex of a normally crystalline vinylidene chloride copolymer to form a flat, continuous, coherent coagulum having a porosity gradient from one surface to the other, washing the coagulum free of coagulant, cutting the coagulum, if necessary, to form a tape, drying the tape below its fusion temperature and finally exposing only the more porous surface of the tape to radiant heat at a temperature between the fusion temperature and the decomposition temperature of the copolymer to fuse the coagulum and simultaneously to roll the edges of the tape without causing fusion of the layers. The tape may be from 1/16 to 1/2 inch wide, and may be made by depositing on a non-porous base wetted with a coagulant solution a latex of a copolymer comprising 92-99% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 8-1% by weight of acrylonitrile. The more porous side (the underside) only of the tape may be exposed to radiant heat at from 175-300 DEG C., preferably for not more than a few seconds. As shown, a tape 10 obtained as described above, passes through snubbing feed-rolls 11, the more porous surface being uppermost, thence around the idler roll 12 and preheat drum 13, to a supercooling roll 14, and is finally taken up by snubbing take-up rolls 15, tape tension being adjusted by the relative speeds of rolls 11 and 15. A radiant preheater 16 may also be fitted above drum 13. Shortly after leaving the drum, the tape is heated by a second radiant heater 17 and this causes fusion and shaping of the tape to the form of Figs. 2-6, the cross-section progressing from that of Fig. 2 to that of Fig. 6 as the tape temperature is raised.
