Abstract

832,679. Vehicle jacks. SIDLER Ltd. April 13, 1956 [April 19, 1955], No. 11312/55. Classes 79(3) and 79(5) A vehicle parking mechanism comprises on each side of the vehicle a roller 18, Figs. 1 and 2, rotatably mounted on a support 14, a power-operated extensible structure 27 between the support and a fixed part 30 of the vehicle mounted so as to swing laterally toward and away from an adjacent road wheel 26, the support 14 being constrained to move laterally toward and away from the wheel, the roller being so shaped that a part 23 engages the road and a driving track 22 engages with the wheel or a part rotating therewith, whereby the wheel is lifted clear of the ground and the roller on engagement with the ground has its rotational axis inclined in a fore and aft direction. As further shown, in Figs. 1 and 2 the structure 27 is formed as a hydraulic cylinder pivoted at 28 to the differential housing of the rear axle casing 11 and a piston rod 31 is pivoted to the support strut 14 which is pivoted at 15 to brackets 13 on spring seats 10. Carried by the lower ends of the struts are the rollers 18 having conical sides 22 and conical bases 23 having depressions 24. In order to swing the rear end of the motor vehicle the cylinders 27 are pressurized to move them from Fig. 1 positions to Fig. 2 positions; in the latter positions the rear wheels 26 are off the ground and contact the tracks 22. In view of the disposition of the rollers engine drive of the wheels 26 in either direction will cause the rear end of the vehicle to be swung in either direction. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), each support strut carries two rollers on parallel axes. The hydraulic pistons and cylinders may be fluid extended and spring retracted, Fig. 8 (not shown), or double acting, Figs. 13 to 16 (not shown). The rollers may be rotationally fixed relative to the strut by selection of the driver, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), the pistons and cylinders thus acting as built-in jacks. In another embodiment, Figs. 20 and 21 (not shown). the rollers are flatter than in Figs. 1 and 2, the roller sides engaging the wheel treads. In a further embodiment, Fig. 22, the ground engaging roller is fast with a roller 125 adapted to engage a disc 126 on the brake drum 127. The vehicle may carry a locking device to prevent the rollers being lowered while the vehicle is travelling at speed, the device permitting roller movement only when first or reverse gears are engaged. Alternatively the locking device may be released by a centrifugal, hydraulic or electric governor driven by the vehicle transmission. Specification 832,680 is referred to.
