Abstract
832,502. Measuring linear displacement. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 9, 1957 [Jan. 17, 1956], No. 1592/56. Class 40 (1). Linear displacement is measured by a selsyn whose movable member is connected to the displaceable object by means of a crosshead and connecting rod. The object 1 moves in the direction of the arrows and carries a rod 2 to which is attached a crosshead 3. The arm 6 is fixed at one end to the selsyn rotor and the other end slides along the crosshead as the latter moves up and down. The voltage output of the selsyn is proportional to sin # and therefore to the algebraic value of the distance of the crosshead above the line AA. The device .can be protected from the atmosphere and hence used under humid conditions such as in the investigation of the behaviour of model ships in a tank.
