Apparatus for cooling sinter comprises a vibratory two-stage conveyer C in the form of a trough divided by screening grate bars 13a, 13b into an upper section 9 cooled by water troughs 25 and a lower section 10 having a steel floor 5 and sides formed with air ports 27 controlled by flaps 28, and a hood 26 dipping into the water troughs 25 and connected by a duct 30 to an extractor fan 29, the conveyer being supported on a frame 14, Fig. 5, by pivoted arms 15 and opposed springs 18 and vibrated by an eccentric 22a driven by a motor 22. Ground hot sinter from a hopper 2 passes under a movable gate 32 on to the grate bars 13a, 13b, large material being eventually discharged on to a belt conveyer 34. Unsintered fines escaping through the narrow spaced bars 13a in the first part 9a of the conveyer C, pass through openings 35 in the floor 5 and shoots 36 on to a vibratory trough conveyer feeding a hopper 40. This material is used again with fresh ore and coke charged into the sintering machine. Coarser material escaping through the more widely spaced bars 13b in the second part 9b of the conveyer, pass through openings 41 and shoots 42 on to a vibratory trough conveyer 43 feeding a hopper 46. This material is used to line the sinter pans. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the conveyer C and hood 26 are made integral and have a flexible connection to the duct 30. Water sprayed on to the hood sides collects in the troughs 25. A further modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), has resilient flaps between the hood and the conveyer walls. The air may be supplied under pressure and may be reversed through the grate bars.
