Abstract

831,617. Automatic exchange systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 8, 1958 [Sept. 3, 1957], No. 27711/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (4). Outgoing and incoming relay sets employ voice frequency signals for setting-up, control, and supervision of connections over an interexchange link and add one pulse at the end of each voice frequency digital pulse train before transmission so that the first pulse of each train may be used to effect line-splitting at the incoming relay set. When taken into use the outgoing relay set transmits a voice-frequency pulse to seize the incoming relay set. Impulses are dialled into a mechanical impulse regenerator at the outgoing relay set, the registration in the regenerator being increased by one in response to the end of a digit. At the incoming relay set the first pulse of each digit train operates a line-splitting relay and the remaining pulses of each digit control routing. On reply, a voice frequency pulse constituting an answer signal is reverted to the outgoing relay set to complete the talking path. If the calling party clears first, a release guard lamp lights and a thermal relay is connected up to repeat a clear forward signal which causes the incoming relay set to revert a release guard signal until it has released following selectors. If the calling party clears before a digit is dialled a release alarm lamp lights as well as the release guard lamp and the impulse regenerator stores a single pulse but has its impulsing contacts masked so as not to interfere with the transmission of a clear forward signal. When the incoming relay set returns to normal the release guard signal ceases and the outgoing relay set is released. If the called party clears first a clear back signal is sent and the incoming relay set waits for a clear forward signal from the outgoing relay set before sending back the release guard signal. Where an operator controls the call from the outgoing end the called subscriber may flash his switch hook for attention and cause pulses to revert which are interpreted alternately as clear back and answer signals. It is stated that the inter-exchange link may be a radio channel.
