Abstract

A catalyst used in the polymerization of ethylene, is formed by mixing a metal with a compound of formula MeXm or MeOnXp, wherein Me is a metal of Group Ib, IIb, IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa or VIII, X is halogen, -CN, -SCN, -OR, -SR or -OCOR (R being a saturated organic radical) and m and n + p are the valencies of the metal. Metals specified are Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al, Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Ti, V, Cr, W, Fe, Cu and mixtures as well as amalgams thereof, and the other catalyst component may be e.g. a compound of Fe, Co (but not cobaltous halide), Ni, Cr, Mo, W, V, Cu, Ag or Hg, but is preferably vanadium tetrachloride or oxytrichloride, chromyl chloride, chromium trichloride, iron trichloride or cupric chloride. If desired the metal may be activated before use with hydrogen or a halogen (film of metal halide obtained). Hydrocarbon diluents may be present. The use of organic halides is specifically excluded.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized, in the absence of organic halides, using a mixture of a metal with a compound of formula MeXm or MeOnXp, wherein Me is a metal of Group IB, IIB, VA, VIA, VIIA or VIII, X is halogen, -CN, -SCN, -OR, -SR or -OCOR (R being a saturated organic radical) and m and n + p are the valencies of the metal. Metal components specified are Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al, Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Ti, V, Cr, W, Fe, Cu and mixtures thereof, and the other catalyst component may be vanadium tetrachloride or oxytrichloride, chromyl chloride, chromium chloride, iron trichloride or cupric chloride. The use of cobaltous halide is excluded. If desired the metal may be activated before use with hydrogen or with a halogen (film of metal halide obtained). The polymerization may be continuous or with addition of ethylene during the reaction, and may be in bulk or in a hydrocarbon liquid such as xylene, hexane or cyclohexane. Purification may be effected by distillation, if desired with the use of steam or alcohol vapour, followed by extraction with alcohols, methanolic HCl, or aqueous acids or bases. By varying the catalyst components, products ranging from wax-like to crystalline materials may be obtained.
