Abstract
830,908. Filter media. AIRCRAFT POROUS MEDIA Inc. Nov. 2, 1956 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 33551/56. Class 46. [Also in Groups IX and XXII] A rigid perforate metallic sheet for use as a filter medium is made from interwoven metallic filaments 11, 12, providing a series of pores 16, which are flattened to provide substantially flat co-planar surfaces 13, 14 and to form between the filaments enlarged contiguous surfaces 15 which are joined together by sintering. The sheet may have a plain weave, Fig. 1, wherein the pores will run normal to the sheet or a plain or twilled "Dutch " weave, Fig. 3 (not shown), wherein the pores will be oblique at 30 to 60 degrees to the surface of the sheet. The filaments may be of stainless steel, nickel or nickel alloys, aluminium, silver or copper. The filaments of either the weft or warp may be of permanent or soft. magnetic metal for removing fine magnetic particles. Two metallic sheets of the same or different woven patterns may be sintered together or a woven sheet may be sintered to a thin nickel, copper or nickel-copper screen with very small pores and formed by electro-deposition, or the woven sheet may be sintered to an imperforate backing sheet. The sheet is of particular use in tangential flow filtration for use in aircraft engine carburetters. Examples are given of the sizes of the filaments of the weave and the dimensions of the pores.
