Abstract

830,681. Bookbinding machines. FRENCH, L. J. B. R. Feb. 13, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No. 6701/56. Class 16 A bookbinding machine comprises a pair of conveyer belts 1 which take the books back downwards to an auxiliary conveyer 2, moving at a higher linear speed, from which the books pass one by one on to a stacking head 4 which is movable laterally to allow each book to fall on its spine on to a stacking platform 40 and to move each book laterally out of the way of the next succeeding book. Delivery guides 3 maintain the books vertical and each book, as it passes on to the stacking head 4, depresses a trigger 5, pivoted at 6, to actuate a microswitch 7 and energize a solenoid 8 bringing into operation a single cycle clutch to move the stacking head to one side and then return it to its original position. The clutch 14 is driven from one of the pulleys 12 driving the belt 2 and carries a crankpin 23 joined by link 25 to a lever 27 pivoted at 28 and connected with one of a pair of parallel arms 29 pivoted at 30 to a projection 31 on the stacking head 4. On the return stroke of the head 4, a vertical part 32 of the head 4 engages the side of the dropped book on platform 40 and moves it past a spring pressed pawl 34 which projects through an opening 37 in the part 32 and the book is retained between the pawl 34 and a spring- loaded retaining arm 35 pivoted at 36. When a number of books have been stacked side by side, a projection 38 on arm 35 operates a microswitch 39 to sound an electric bell to warn the operator to remove the stack. The dropping of the books on to the platform squares the backs of the books. The stacking apparatus may be used in conjunction with an adhesive applying bookbinding machine as in Specification 728,221 with the glue tank, mounted in slidable runners, to be extracted at right angles to the conveyers and with two rollers used, the second of which may have a series of spiral flutes cut into its peripheral surface to rub the cut edges of the book slightly open to assist penetration of the glue. In certain types of glue, the stacking platform 40 may be of box form and heated electrically to assist drying. Specification 830,682 [Group XXVIII] also is referred to.
