Abstract

830,469. Railway vehicle floors; doors. LEWIS, E. M. Oct. 1, 1956 [July 1, 1955], No. 19067/55. Class 103(4) [Also in Group XII] A coke quenching car comprises a lightweight tubular chassis in the form of longitudinal mild steel tubes 15, 16 17 and 18 extending for the full length of the car and interconnected by bracing members, and a pair of fixed hoppers 3 having floors 8 lined with overlapping alloy plates 9 and a lined side wall 5, the bottom half of which constitutes a door 6 suspended by hinges 7. The hopper floors 8 comprise a series of transverse trough members 12 welded to longitudinal battens 10 on which the plates 9 are hooked by lugs 11. Said trough members are also formed wth angle pieces 20 bolted to support blocks 19 welded to the tubes 17 and 18, Fig. 8. A packing 22 of silicone rubber or the like is disposed between the blocks 19 and troughs 12, and also between the angle pieces, the bolts and the blocks. The plates 9 may have lugs at both ends engaging the battens 10, the lower lug also engaging the top of the next lower plate, Fig. 7 (not shown). Tubular end frames erected transversely of the tubes 17 and 18, Fig. 3 (not shown), carry the end walls of the hoppers and also longitudinal tubes 26, 27 and 28, which support inner lining plates 14 and an outer shell 13 constructed like the floor and forming the fixed upper part of the side wall 5. Each door 6, Fig. 9, comprises a series of cast steel plates 32, each attached to a pair of vertical ribs 33 welded to a massive longitudinal tube 31. The hinges 7 comprise lugs 29 welded at intervals to the tube 27 and pivoted to corresponding lugs 30 welded to the tube 31 Studs 36 cast in the plates 32 engage lugs 35 on the ribs and are fixed by nuts 37. A packing 38 of silicone rubber is provided between each lug and the door plate, and between each lug and the fixing nut, and a sleeve 39 of the same material is provided between each fixing stud and the respective lug. The door operating equipment (not shown) is housed in end frames 34 of the chassis. The hinge pins rotate in nylon sleeves, and the metal parts are sprayed with aluminium and painted with plastic material.
