Abstract

830,188. Steam separators. BADGER MANUFACTURING CO. Aug 21, 1957 [Nov. 1, 1956], No. 26381/57. Class 123(3) Finely-divided, entrained particles of liquid are separated from vapour by passing it through a mass of crinkled or knitted wire mesh in which the free volume is from 92 to 99.4% of the apparent volume, the surface area is from 50 to 600 sq. ft. per cubic foot and the diameter of the individual wires is from 0.003 to 0.016 inches, and by maintaining the ratio of the velocity of the vapour to the square root of its specific volume within the range from 1.5 to 1 to 4 to 1, and preferably within the range from 2 to 1 and 3 to 1, during its passage through said mass. The process is of particular utility in the flash evaporation of sea water to render it potable when its effectiveness may be increased by controlling the ratio of sea water feed to condensate within the range from 25 to 1 to 200 to 1, thus controlling the size of the entrained liquid particles.
