Abstract

<PICT:0829859/III/1> In recovering ammonia from a gas by reacting with aqueous ammonium bisulphate liquor, separating ammonium sulphate from the liquor, recycling the liquor to the reaction, thermally decomposing the (NH4)2SO4 to form NH3 and (NH4)HSO4, recovering the NH3, and recycling the (NH4)HSO4 to the reaction, a slurry of (NH4)2SO4 crystals in liquor i withdrawn from the reaction and molten (NH4)HSO4 from the thermal decomposition is mixed with the slurry to dissolve the bisulphate in the liquor for return to the reaction and to precipitate additional (NH4)2SO4 crystals. Coke oven gas enters absorber 27 at 26 and bubbles through aqueous (NH4)HSO4 therein. Unabsorbed gases leave at 28. The slurry of crystals is withdrawn at 29 to mixing vessel 32, provided with stirrer 34, where molten (NH4)HSO4 is added through 33. The contents of vessel 32 may be cooled to less than 100 DEG F. by coil 36. The crystal slurry passes to centrifuge 38, and bisulphate solution is recycled thence through 39 to absorber 27. The separated (NH4)2SO4 crystals pass through drier 42, supply hopper 44 and feeder 46 to decomposition vessel 47 heated by coil 48 to 550-750 DEG F. Preferably a molten bath 49 of (NH4)HSO4 is maintained in 47 and the rate of feed through 46 and withdrawal through 33 is controlled to maintain the level constant. NH3 passes out through purifier 53, pump 52, and drying tower 57 and is liquefied in compressor 58.
