Abstract

In a method of forming a film on selected areas only of a vitreous surface, there is placed on the surface, along the areas where it is desired to prevent the formation of the film, a thermally stable masking material which is inert to the vitreous surface when such is heated, the surface is heated and a film-forming material is directed thereupon, and the residue of the masking material is removed after the film-forming material has been deposited. Suitable masking substances are the chlorides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium; they may be applied in suspension in an anhydrous solvent such as ethyl or butyl acetate, acetone, or ethylene dichloride which may contain binding and/or thickening agents. A suitable composition comprises a solution of nitrocellulose in butyl acetate, mineral oil, sodium sulphate and a levelling and thickening agent. Specification 807,789 is referred to.ALSO:A composition for applying to those parts of a vitreous surface not to be coated by a subsequently-applied film-forming material comprises a solution of nitrocellulose in butyl acetate, mineral oil, sodium sulphate and a levelling and thickening agent containing finely-divided silica. In place of sodium sulphate, the sulphates of potassium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium, or the chlorides of these metals or of sodium, may be used.
