Abstract

<PICT:0828851/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0828851/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0828851/IV (a)/3> In the extrusion of thermoplastic material through a die to form a seamless tube by a process in which the tube is expanded by means of entrapped gas and later collapsed, the tube is cooled below its setting temperature between the die and the point of collapse by continuously cooling the entrapped gas and continuously circulating the gas within the tube in such a path that it is directed on to the internal surface of the tube. The gas may be air, and the thermoplastic material may be polyethylene, polystyrene, nylon, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride copolymers, vinylidene chloride copolymers, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, ethyl cellulose, methyl methacrylate polymers, or polyvinyl-formal, -acetal or -butyral. The gas may be cooled while passing about the longitudinal axis of the tube-and may be so circulated that the thermo, plastic material sets within the first third of the path of travel of the tube from the die to the point of collapse. Preferably, the gas is so circulated that it passes about the longitudinal axis of the tube towards the die, is directed radially outwards towards the internal surface of the tube, is passed along the internal surface of the tube away from the die, and is then drawn inwardly, in a converging manner, towards the axis of the tube for recirculation. As shown, suitable apparatus comprises a die 1 having an annular extrusion orifice 2 supplied with thermoplastic material via inlet 5 and ring passage 4, a gas inlet 18 fitted with valve 19, a pair of nip rollers (not shown) spaced from the die orifice to draw the tube therefrom and collapse it, a gas circulating device and a gas cooling device. The circulating device may be a fan 11 driven by an electric motor 10, mounted between the die and the open-ended cylinder 9, so as to draw the gas through the cylinder and the perforated plate 8 and ring plate 7 towards the fan. The fan assembly is supported by the table 6. The fan may be of the centrifugal type having spaced around its periphery a number of stationary gas deflectors 13 so set that they tend to strip the gas from the fan and direct it radially outwards, or an impeller type fan 23 ((Fig. 3) may be used in conjunction with a peaked deflecting surface 24. The cooling device may be placed at the open end of the cylinder remote from the fan so as to cool the gas drawn towards the fan, and may consist of a grid of pipes 14 fitted with fins 15 and having inlet and outlet supply pipes 16, 17 carrying a cooling fluid. Specifications 654,550 and 716,160 are referred to.
