Abstract

<PICT:0828779/III/1> <PICT:0828779/III/2> A spray booth wherein overspray paint materials are captured, killed and floated by an aqueous solution of paint killing agents comprises apparatus for separating the floating point and maintaining continuous recirculation of the liquid consisting of a tank having a weir forming part of the boundary of the tank over which the killed paint and adjacent aqueous solution flow into container means. Air is drawn across the article being sprayed, the air is washed and the paint particles collected in the circulating aqueous solution in the booth. The aqueous solution and killed paint flow from a trough over a vertical plate 2 to a tank 6 then over a weir 8 to a sluice trough 10 at the lower end of which it passes under a baffle 16 to a sludge collection trough 18 where it passes through one or more screens 20, 22. A pump 24 skims the top layer of killed paint and discharges it through pipe 44 to a separation chamber 26 and through a pipe 46 to the sluice trough and through a pipe 50 to nozzles 54, 56, 58 and 66. Liquid in trough 18 is also recirculated by a submerged tunnel 28 which is connected to air washers 30, 32 and 34. The circulation may also be increased by supplying liquid from a trough 62 having a partition 63 above the liquid in the tank the partition being cut away at 64 to provide flow of liquid into the trough and into the tank. A weir 36 parallel to the weir 8 may be provided to prevent rearward flow of the liquid. A float 68 in the trough 18 controls the level of the liquid in the trough so that air does not enter a tunnel 42 connected to an air washer. A float 78 in the tank prevents the level falling too low in the tank. The pump 24 comprises a motor driving a vertical shaft carrying a plate with upstanding vanes placed just beneath the liquid surface. The outlet pipe from the pump enters the top of the separation chamber 26 and an outlet shoot 106 discharges the upper layer of liquid comprising the killed paint. An overflow comprises a cup 108 below the shoot and connected by a pipe 112 to a pipe 52 entering the bottom of the chamber and connected to the pipe 50. The cup is surrounded by partition 114 which reaches almost to the bottom of the chamber. A second overflow pipe 116 is connected to the pipe 52, the flow of liquid being controlled by valves to provide a discharge from the shoot 106. Specifications 754,585, 815,470 and 828,778 are referred to.
