Abstract

A composition convertible at room temperature to the cured, solid, elastic state comprises (1) a liquid linear organopolysiloxane containing terminal Si-bonded OH groups and having a viscosity of from 1000 to 50,000 cp. at 25 DEG C., (2) an organosilicon compound of the formula <FORM:0828657/IV (a)/1> where each R is an alkyl or halogenated alkyl radical and R1 is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, alkoxy or aryloxy radical or a halogenated derivative thereof, or a liquid partial hydrolysate thereof, and (3) a mono-carboxylate of Pb, Sn, Zr, Sb, Fe, Cd, Ba, Ca, Ti, Bi or Mn. Siloxane (1) may contain saturated, unsaturated or halogenated hydrocarbon radicals and may be made by heating a cyclic siloxane with a rearrangement catalyst and heating the resulting high molecular weight polymer with water, e.g. at 150 DEG to 170 DEG C. until the desired viscosity is attained. Catalysts (3) disclosed are the resinates, linoleates, stearates, oleates, acetates, butyrates and octoates of the specified metals. Compound (2) and catalyst (3) are each preferably used in amount of from 0.1 to 5% by weight of the siloxane. Fillers, e.g. titania, lithopone, zinc oxide, zirconium silicate, silica aerogel, iron oxide, diatomaceous earth, burnt clay, calcium carbonate, fume and precipitated silicas and glass fibres, may also be added. Examples are given. Uses.-For taking dental impressions; as a sealer for joints between adjacent highway sections; as electrical insulation material, gasket material and shock-absorbers; and as adhesives, especially for polyethylene surfaces.
