Abstract

828,059. Magazine gramophones. AUTOMATIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS S.A. Sept. 27, 1955 [Nov. 3, 1954], No. 27542/55. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XV] A magazine-type phonograph comprises a motor 13 driving a turntable 16, a transfer mechanism 21 and a magazine 27 including discs 36, 37 mounted on a sleeve 38 which is rotatably journalled about a sleeve 34 and is driven by a motor 44 through gears 42, 43. The selector 46 is secured to the sleeve 34 and slidably carries inner and outer rows of pins 49, 48 which are individually movable to the right in order to make a selection. The sensing mechanism (see also Fig. 4) comprises a bracket 50 which is attached to the disc 36 and supports a pair of pivots 52, 53. Each pivot supports a swinging bracket in which a vertical spindle is pivoted; the spindles 56, 57 having oppositely disposed sensing fingers 58, 59. Thus, when the magazine is rotating in one direction, a pin in the row 48 will swing the bracket 54 and actuate contacts 61 whilst when the magazine is moving in the other direction a pin in the row 49 will swing the bracket 55 and close spring contact 62; the contacts 61, 62 stopping the motor 44. Thus the mechanism has two selector stops for each record and the transfer mechanism places the record on the turntable either side up according to the direction of rotation of the magazine. The selection being played is cancelled by operating one of a pair of solenoids 63, 64, the plungers of which swing rocker arms 65, 66 about pivots on the bracket 50 to retract the pin 48 or 49. The selector pin setting mechanism comprises a scanning arm 71 which is mounted on a rotatable tube 73 and carries a rocker arm 78 adapted to move the pins 48, 49. The arm 78 is rocked by means of a push rod 94 having a control knob 96 and a push button 95 or by electromagnetic means 91, 92, 93. The tube 73 is provided with a gear 101 which is driven by the pinion 102 of a selector actuating and indexing assembly (see Figs. 8, 9 and 10, not shown). The pinion 102 is formed integral with an indexing wheel 112 and a driving wheel. The wheel 112 co-operates with a dog actuated by electromagnetic means; the electrical circuits controlling the scanning motor 107 and selecting solenoid 91 being automatically actuated in conjunction with the said means. The shaft of wheel 112 carries the wiper arm of a commutator having twenty contact segments whilst a second commutator having ten segments is provided with a wiper carrying wheel in mesh with the driving wheel. The records are spaced apart by separators 40 and are held in position by rubber rings 151, 152 having resilient fingers (see Fig. 12, not shown). Semicircular guide members or belt-type retainers extend around the lower portion of the magazine (see Figs. 3, 13 and 14, not shown). For details of the record transfer mechanism, record arm, pedestal, electrical control circuits, tone arm control devices, &c., Specification 647,162 should be referred to. In a modification, Fig. 15, the gear 101 is driven by the motor 175 through a resilient rim 177 and a clutch 178, 179, the mechanism being locked in any selecting position by a magnetic winding 184 which draws a dog 182 into engagement with a wheel 183 against the action of a spring 185. A scanning control unit, Fig. 17, is driven from the crank 186 of the motor 44 through an arm 188 which is moved against the action of a spring. As the arm 188 is reciprocated it advances a counting wheel 191 which eventually causes a pin 199 to engage contacts 201 and stop the motor 44. A solenoid 202 is connected in parallel with the selector solenoid 91 and is moved whenever a selection is made in order to release dogs 195, 197 and permit the wheel 191 to return to its initial position under the action of a weight 193. Specification 828,060 also is referred to.
