Abstract
827,608. Variable-speed gear. KRAUS, C. E. April 16, 1956 [Jan. 6, 1956], No. 11533/56. Class 80 (2). A friction gear variable automatically with the load and having no other control, comprises pairs of input and output toric races 11, 12 and 16, 17, each tracked by three sets of rollers, each set consisting of three substantially coaxial rollers 23, 24, 25 which, for ratio shift, are precessed about a common fixed pivot-pin 26 lying on one side of all the rollers, by the load acting at the contact points of the rollers to turn them individually and independently about parallel axes formed by pins 38, 42, 45b, arranged in a common plane at right-angles to the shift axis 26, and each lying in a plane axially spaced from that of the contact-points of the corresponding roller, whereby drive torque produces the processional turning moment of the roller about its pin. Each pin 38 &c. connects a roller-supporting bearing-ring 39, 43, 46 to a bracket 36, 41, 45, individually pivoted on the pin 26. As shown in Fig. 2, anticlockwise movement of each roller 23 about its pin 38 in response to increase in load, is resisted by a helical compression spring 57 acting downwards on a rod 50, slidable in an offset bracket 52 and pressing on the bearing ring 39 of the corresponding roller 23. Load reduction permits the springs 57 to expand and cause clockwise pivoting of the rollers. The pivotal movement causes the rollers to precess in the appropriate direction about the common pivotal axis 26 to a new ratio position in which the springs 57 again balance the load. In Figs. 10-16, not shown, the load-responsive springs 57 are replaced by pairs of pistons acting oppositely on each roller support ring and backed by fluid or rubber trapped in a cylinder block. The input races 11, 12 are urged apart by a sprag 13 or by diaphragm springs, and the output shaft 21 carrying the output races 16, 17, may, for automotive use, drive the load 20 through a planetary reverse gear 22. Specification 763,514 is referred to.
