Class 27 In a machine for vending several different types of articles, such as bottled beverages, from corresponding sets of inclined shelves 27 by withdrawal of a selected bottle past a coinreleased gate 36, 37 or 38 the gates are normally locked by separate solenoid-operated release mechanisms 32 and insertion of a coin renders all three release mechanisms operative to release the gates but the action of withdrawing a selected bottle moves the corresponding gate to operate switches that de-energize the solenoids for the other two gates and thus hold them locked. Each gate is mounted on a shaft 42 spring-loaded towards the closed position in which a pin 60 on the latch 50 engages a locking shoulder 59 on a cam 46 carried by the shaft. A coin inserted in a slot 15 operates a switch D-3 which energizes a locking solenoid 126 of a holding relay 89 and the relay centre contacts move down so that contacts 93, 94 energize a circuit leading to double-pole switches A-3, B-3 in each gate release mechanism and contacts 104, 105 energize a coin-release solenoid 110 so that the coin is arrested. Opening of the contacts 93, 95 de-energizes a coin-rejecting solenoid 98 so that further coins inserted during the operating cycle are rejected by an obstruction to a return shoot. Withdrawal of a selected bottle rotates the corresponding gate 36 and a lobe 65 on the cam 46 engages a lever 66 to operate the switches A-3, B-3, thus completing a circuit to the solenoid 54 for the gate 36 and interrupting the current to the other release solenoids. Operation of the solenoid 54 withdraws the latch pin 60 and the gate is allowed to rotate further so that the lobe 65 engages a lever 84 and operates a switch C-3, thus completing a circuit to the unlocking solenoid 90 of the holding relay 89. The centre contacts of the relay move up and the contacts 93, 95 energize the solenoid 98 to remove the obstruction from the coin path and the opening of contacts 104, 105 de-energizes the solenoid 110 to release the coin into a coin box. Full-stroke rotation of the gate after operation of the switches A-3, B-3 is ensured by a pawl 76. Articles are successively vended from the uppermost shelf of each set of shelves and progressing downwardly and the customer gains access to the shelves by opening a door 20 having a transparent panel 21. A coin totalizer and change-giving mechanism may be provided and, when vending articles of different prices, a separate return wire from each of the gate release mechanisms leads back to the coin-receiving device.
