Abstract

827,115. Curling; sizing and restoring shape of beading. KRADOSKA, E. C. Oct. 24, 1957, No. 33265/57. Class 83 (4). Tube expanding.-A bead-forming apparatus for rolling a bead on the edge of an open drum comprises a bead-forming mechanism including a vertically-disposed supporting member, a plurality of shafts arranged radially in a circle normal to the axis of the supporting member, freely rotatable beading rolls on the ends of said shafts which are mounted for radial movement towards and away from the supporting member, a platform for supporting a cylindrical workpiece, means for raising said platform to bring the upper edge of said workpiece into engagement under the beading rolls with a predetermined pressure, and yielding means normally biasing said shafts radially outwardly to adapt said rolls for operating on said workpiece, the roll faces being slanted downwardly and inwardly for progressive engagement with the edge of the workpiece, whereby said rolls are moved radially inwardly by the pressure of the workpiece into the appropriate position for beading the edge of the workpiece. The apparatus includes a housing 10 partly disposed in the floor 14 and a drum platform 18 which is raised and lowered by an air cylinder 22. The bead-forming mechanism includes a motor M which drives a shaft 25 on which is mounted a disc 40 carrying the radially slidable outwardlybiased beading roll shafts 34 which are linked to a vertically movable spring-loaded hub 44 on the shaft 25. The shaft 34 of one of the beading rolls carries drums 49 pivotally supporting an air cylinder 52 for actuating a forming roll 54 mounted on a pendant lever 61. In operation, the edge of the drum engages the slanting surface 45 of the rolls and forces the rolls inwardly until the edge reaches the forming grooves 48. As the partly rolled edge moves downwardly it contacts the groove 64 in the roll 54 which completes the bead. If the bead should buckle the roll 54 straightens it out. The open end of the drum may be expanded during the formation of the bead by increasing the tension of the spring 46 acting on the hub 44. An adjustable pressure-operated clutch for automatically stopping the upward movement of the drum when the bead is completed includes a shaft 79 (Figs. 5 and 8) not normally affected by movement of the platform 18 but which passes through an outer rigid sleeve 91 resting on the platform and an inner collapsible sleeve 92. The chamber 93 between the sleeves is connected to the air cylinder 22 and when the pressure builds up in the cylinder 22 due to the drum engaging the rolls the pressure also builds up in the chamber 93. At a predetermined pressure the sleeve 92 grips the shaft 79 which travels with the platform and a finger 86 on the shaft closes a valve control handle 88. The drum is automatically centred and clamped on to the platform by a pair of arcuate clamps 100 actuated by drums 102 connected to a pin 108, the lower end of which is attached to links 110 which have their inner ends pivoted to a casting 114 rotatably mounted on a hub carried by the platform. The casting 114 is rotated by air cylinder 116. The beaded drum is pushed off the platform 18 by an arcuate shoe 132 operated by an air cylinder 126 (Fig. 6). In an embodiment the spring 46 is replaced by a stud S which threadedly engages the block 44. Also the slanting surfaces of the rolls are replaced by a spherical surface or radius 47<SP>1</SP>.
