In a method of cleaning the heating surfaces of economisers and similar plants by subjecting the surfaces to a falling shower of shot, the fallen shot being collected and raised in order to return the shot to the surfaces to be cleaned, the return of the shot occurs intermittently in bulk portions and during the return conveyance of the shot the latter substantially maintains the temperature it had when collected.
