Abstract
Conjugated diolefines are prepared by reacting acetaldehyde or formaldehyde with a monoolefine of not more than 6 carbon atoms in the vapour phase over a synthetic petroleum cracking catalyst containing 0-10% of an oxide of a Group IIa metal. The mono-olefine is preferably a tertiary olefine and may be isobutene, 2-methylbutene-2 or 2-methylbutene-1. Formaaldehyde may be introduced as industrial formalin containing 36-40% by weight of formaldehyde or as a substance which produces formaldehyde under the reaction conditions, e.g. paraformaldehyde or trioxane. The proportion of aldehyde in the reaction mixture is preferably below 10 mol. per cent and this may be achieved by using an inert diluent such as nitrogen, a lower paraffin, carbon dioxide or steam. Reaction temperatures of 150-400 DEG C. can be used with contact times of up to 5 seconds. Atmospheric pressure or just above is preferred although others can be employed. The catalyst may be, for example, silica-alumina, silica-magnesia, silica-zirconia, silica-boria or silica-titania. If an oxide of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium is present the proportion should be below 10%. Silicaalumina containing about 85% silica is preferred. The pore size of the silica is preferably above 30 . The catalysts may be activated by heating to above 500 DEG C. and reactivated by heating in air to burn off carbon. Fixed, moving or fluidized beds can be used.
