Abstract
Monomer is recovered from a solution containing a normally gaseous monomer, solvent and polymer by flashing the solution in a series of stages at progressively reduced pressures, so forming a plurality of vapour streams at various pressures. These streams are cooled to <PICT:0826284/III/1> form condensate which is mainly solvent and any remaining vapours (chiefly monomer) are removed therefrom. Referring to Fig. 1, effluent from polymerization reactor 11 and comprising polymer, solvent and monomer is heated in heat exchanger 13 and passed to reduced pressure flashing zone 14 where monomer and solvent vaporize through conduit 23 are cooled in heat exchanger 24 to give monomer stream 26 and solvent stream 27. The liquid stream from zone 14 is flashed twice more in zones 17 under lower pressure and 21 under still lower pressure. The several liquid solvent streams are combined and pass to stripping zone 41 and can be recycled to polymerization reactor 11, while the several monomer vapour streams are recompressed to polymerization pressure, combined and recycled. The solvent streams need not all be recombined before recycling.ALSO:Monomer is removed from a solution containing a normally gaseous monomer, solvent and polymer, especially polyolefins prepared using a chromium oxide catalyst, by flashing the solution in a series of stages at progressively reduced pressures, so forming a plurality of vapour streams at various pressures. These streams are cooled to form condensate which is mainly solvent and any remaining vapours, mainly monomer, are removed from the condensed solvent. The solvent and monomer may be returned to the polymerization zone.
