Abstract
825,255. Hearing aids. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Nov. 19, 1957, No. 35981/57. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group VI] An ear plug comprises a resilient tapered hollow body 6, the inner end of which is expansible laterally and a valve dividing the body into inner and outer chambers 7, 8, the valve admitting fluid to the inner chamber 8 to expand it to fit the ear and retaining fluid in the chamber 8 when the plug is in use. The tapered rubber body 6 is divided by a partition 9 into two chambers 7, 8 which contain a fluid, e.g. air, glycerine, water or a glycerine and water mixture. A valve member 12 closes an aperture 10 in the partition 9 and has a flange 13 with ports 15 which seats against the partition 9. After inserting the body 6 in the ear, the outer chamber 7 is compressed to move the valve member 12 from its seating and force fluid into the inner chamber 8 which is thus expanded laterally to fit the ear. The valve prevents flow of fluid from the inner chamber 8 until, after removing the plug from the ear the valve portion of the plug is compressed to displace the valve member. Acoustic tubes may extend through the plug and be connected to an earphone that is not supported by the plug. In a modification an earphone 23, Fig. 2, is partially enclosed in a cup 22 at the outer end of the plug, a sound receiving recess 26 being adjacent the inner side of the earphone. A flexible tube 27 connects the recess 26 with the inner end of the plug.
