Abstract
825,201. Grass drying apparatus. ATKINSON'S AGRICULTURAL APPLIANCES Ltd. Jan. 6, 1956 [Oct. 7, 1954], No. 28856/54. Class 34(2) Grass to be dried is taken by conveyers 17, 14 to the top of superposed conveyers 5, 6, 7 which are housed, with the conveyer 14, in a casing 1 having a roof partially covered with glass wool and walls of insulant slabs 2. The conveyer 17 ana a spiked, motor-driven roller 20-which deposits the grass evenly across the width of the conveyer 14-are mounted in an open-ended and open-topped casing 18. The dried grass is discharged through a transverse slot 4 and the conveyers 5, 6, 7 are driven by a motor 34 through pawl and ratchet transmission mechanism housed in a box 35 and having two pawls so arranged that as one makes a return or idle stroke the other makes a driving stroke and vice versa, means being provided to vary the strokes of the pawls to control the conveyer movement rate. The conveyer rollers 8, 11, 13, 15, are adjustable for height above the ground and the conveyers 17, 14 are driven by the fan motor 21 through a pawl and ratchet transmission mechanism of the type described. Drying air is supplied adjacent the discharge end of the casing 1 below the conveyer 7 by means including a heater 23, a supply duct 22 and a fan unit 24, the heater comprising an oil burner having a jacket through which air drawn from the atmosphere is passed before following a circuitous path within the burner. The hot air is filtered beforeentering the drying space via a distributer box mounted in the casing and having a plurality, of channels which receive the air simultaneously from the duct 22 and direct it into the space at zones spaced widthwise of the casing. Pivoted deflector plates above the channel outlets are adjustable from the casing exterior to vary the direction of the isuing air. In an alternative box construction the channels are dispensed with and the box is covered with a plate mounting one or more air diffusers controllable from outside the casing. In both box constructions and upward air flow may be cut off and the air used for cleaning the casing interior. Part of the air passed through the casing may be returned to the burner through a duct 25. A grass baler in combination with a further conveyer upon which the dried grass is subjected to a cooling air stream may be combined with the drying apparatus.
