825,047. Tempering glass. MANUFACTURES DES GLACES PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE SAINT-GOBAIN, CHAUNY CIREY S. A. DES. Oct. 25, 1955 [Oct. 25, 1954], No. 30540/55. Addition to 704,312. Class 56. A glass sheet which may be flat or curved, transparent or translucent, coloured or not has at least one "core-compressed" area in all parts of which there exists a system of compressive stresses in any direction parallel to the faces of the sheet, the stresses in the surrounding zone being characteristic of tempered glass. The process for making such area(s) comprises heating the sheet substantially to softening point and then rapidly cooling it, but during at least part of the heating, the desired area is protected by a screen of low calorific capacity (e.g. a thin sheet of polished metal) on one or both faces, and the magnitude of the compressive stresses to be produced can be increased by reducing the distance of the screen from the part in questions. The core-compressed parts may be readily drilled without fracturing making the sheets useful for building construction apart from their use as safety glass.
