Abstract
824,789. Radioactive analysis. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 15,1958 [Jan. 15, 1957], No. 1458/57. Class 40 (3). The concentration of a trace element in a base material is determined by subtracting the electrical outputs corresponding to the gammaray spectrum produced by two irradiated samples of the material, one of which contains the trace element. In the Figure the two matched thallium activated sodium iodide crystals 3 and 4 are exposed to the samples 5 and 6 respectively which have been previously irradiated by a neutron source, associated similar photo-multiplier tubes 1 and 2 detect the scintillations produced. By means of switch 8, operated at ¢-second intervals in conjunction with switch 11 the output of each photomultiplier is passed in turn through an amplifier 9 to the kicksorter 13 the bias of which is controlled by the recorder 10. The kicksorter output is applied via switch 11 to the ratemeter 12 in which the outputs corresponding to the pulse rate of each source at the energy level corresponding to the kicksorter bias setting are subtracted, the resulting signal being recorded at 10. The kicksorter bias is varied over a range corresponding to the energy range required, hence the recorder indicates the difference in the two gamma-ray spectra and isolates the spectrum of the trace element. The concentration is measured by comparison with the spectrum of a known amount of irradiated trace element.
