Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol yarns and films are made by saponifying yarns and films of polyvinyl esters (while preserving their structure) with a solution containing at least 0.7 mol. per litre of an alkali metal alcoholate in methanol, the molecular weight of the polyvinyl ester being such that a 5% (by weight) solution thereof in a mixture of 15 volumes of 95% (by volume) alcohol and 85 volumes of ethyl acetate at 20 DEG C. has a viscosity of at least 8 centipoises. The saponification is preferably carried out by passing the yarns or films first thriugh a tank containing saponifying solution at room temperature, e.g. 20-25 DEG C., and then through a second tank containing saponifying solution at a higher temperature, preferably 40-70 DEG C. The yarns or films are preferably subjected to a tension capable of producing molecular orientation during saponification. The water-solubility of the polyvinyl alcohol yarns and films obtained may be reduced either by fixing some of the hydroxyl groups by means of an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, or by producing cross-linking therein by one or more of the following: heat, reaction with polyfunctional aldehydes, e.g. glyoxal, or with polyisocyanates or by passage through an alcoholic solution of an alcoholate of a polyvalent metal, e.g. aluminium ethylate. The only polyvinyl ester specified is PV acetate, through it is mentioned that copolymers may be used. Alkali metal alcoholates specified are Na Li and K methylates; ethylates, propylates and butylates are mentioned.
