Abstract

823,835. Moulding insulating cones for commutators. FIBRE DIAMOND. Feb. 11, 1958 [Feb. 11, 1957 ; Nov. 29, 1957], No. 4422/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXXV] An insulating cone for the V-rings of commutators is made of a plurality of spirally arranged turns 1, 2; 3 of insulating material which are of generally V-shaped section and are adhesively secured together. The insulating material may be a bias textile ribbon of asbestos or glass fibre base previously impregnated with a synthetic resin, an oxidisable oil or mineral glue. The ends of the ribbon may be cut on the bias before use. In one device for forming the cone, Fig. 5, the ribbon is fed between the outer periphery of a rotating mandrel 6 and a knurled roller (not shown) which bears against it: so that it is forced into the V-shaped space 14 between a profile 7 on the mandrel 6 and a profile 9 in a stationary cap 8, the cap 8 being provided with a tangential slot (not shown) for the introduction of the ribbon. In a modified method, Fig. 10, the ribbon is wound on a mandrel 6 under the knurled roller 10, as before, but it is first formed into a simple cylinder which is then forced into the required shape after heating by hot-air jets 22 by means of a composite die 16, 17 and then cooled by cold air passing through ducts 23 in the mandrel 6. In a modification, a triple die is used.
