A flushing cistern 1 with a shell moulded from plastic has a strengthening member 5 adapted to engage around the syphon 2 securable to opposite side walls. The member 5 slides vertically over the syphon 2, its ends 4 engaging in corresponding guides 3, e.g. recesses or grooves projecting from and moulded integrally with the walls, or moulded into thin shell walls or formed by a separate member attachable to the walls, and so positioned that the syphon may be reversed through 180 degrees in the shell. The member 5 may be e.g. of plastic, wood or metal whereas the guides 3 and ends 4 might be reversely arranged.
