Abstract

823,678. Electric cooking vessels. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1957 [Jan. 23, 1957], No. 26155/57. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVII] A cooking vessel comprises an open double walled container with a space between the bottom of side walls of the inner and outer side walls and bottom walls of the container, and a hollow handle 18 is attached to the outer wall so that the interior of the handle is in sealed communication with the space 22 between the side walls, whereby the container and handle are immersible in liquid for washing without admittance of moisture to the sealed space. A C-shaped tubular sheathed electric heater 26 is welded to the bottom wall 31 of the inner container and is connected to a thermal switch 34 mounted on a bracket 35 on the wall 31, contact 53a of the switch being selectively positionable by a control rod 62 having one end movable longitudinally in the metal bracket 35 and the other end adjacent the handle. The thermostat setting is adjustable by movement of a knob 93 on the handle. A gear wheel 90 on the shaft 88 of the knob engages a pinion 86 on the rod 62, the lower end of which is threaded to rotate in a threaded nut 61 on the bracket 35 and bears on contact 53a. The sheath of the heater 26 is of aluminium and has a pair of lateral flanges to facilitate welding. The switch 34 (see Group XXXVII) has two contacts 53, 53a on flexible blades 36, 37 mounted on a bolt 49 on the bracket 35. The lower contact 53 is moved downwardly on rise in temperature by a bimetallic strip 38 also mounted on the bolt 49 and bearing down at its free end on an insulating button 55 on the flexible blade 37. The strip 38 is in contact adjacent the bolt with the blade 37, which may be stepped down and is apertured and notched at 37b in order to transmit more heat to the strip 38. A neon lamp 108 in series with a resistor is mounted across the supply cables within the handle so as to light when current is passing through the heater. The outer wall 22 is deformed to provide a flat seating for the flat open end of the handle 18 of phenolic resin, which is screwed in place, a seal being provided by a silicone-impregnated O-ring in a recess 84. The leads pass through a hole 70 in the flattened part of the wall 22 covered by the handle and through holes in a flat plate 76 spaced by bolts from the inner wall serving as reinforcement to the handle support. The control knob 93 has a pointer 93a co-operating with control settings marked on a dial 96. Two terminal pins 97 are mounted in a plug receptacle 101 within the outer end of the handle, which is further protected by a sealing plate 99. The bottom of the inner container is centrally dished downwards at 31 to eliminate warping. The vessel has feet 17 of phenolic resin each attached by a single screw 65.
