822,544. Mounting faceplates and crank-shaft chucks. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 26, 1956 [March 25, 1955], No. 8769/55 Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XI] A crank-shaft of which the main bearing portions 25 and crank-pins 24 are to be induction-heated for hardening is supported by centres 22, 23 between face-plate assemblies 11, 12. Each assembly comprises a face-plate 15 secured to a shaft 13; an intermediate face-plate 16 having a dove-tail projection 16a which slides in a slot 15a in the plate 15; and a work-carrying face-plate 17 pivoted to the plate 16. The plate 16 can be locked in either of two positions relative to the plate 15 by a spring-loaded plunger 18, the two positions being separated by a distance equal to the throw of the crank-shaft. A further plunger 19 locks the rotatable plate 17 in any one of three positions, 120 degrees apart, relative to the plate 16, and a clamp 20 locks the plates 16, 17 together. The face-plate-assemblies are initially set-up as shown in Fig. 3, this corresponding to a crankshaft-position diagrammatically shown in Fig. 4a. A work-coil 10 is then placed over one bearing 25 and the entire assembly rotated by applying a drive to the shafts 13 while the coil is energized. After treating the second main-bearing in the same way, the plungers 18 are withdrawn and the intermediate face-plates 16 moved downwards until they are located by the plungers in the lower of their two fixed positions. The crankpin 24a may now be brought to lie on the axis of the work-coil, Fig. 4b, ready for heat treatment. By releasing the plungers 19 the crank-shaft may be rotated successively to the positions shown in Figs. 4c, 4d, the crank-pins 24b, 24c being heated in turn by the workcoil. The face-plates 16 may be adapted so that crankshafts having any number of throws may be treated.
