Abstract

822,218. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 27, 1957, No. 36974/57. Class 40 (4). Co-ordinate equipment comprises an array of electrical devices through which current can flow in either direction, a device being operated by current flow in the one direction and held by current flow in the reverse direction. First embodiment, Fig. 1. Operation of a row operating device, say ROD2, and a column operating device, say COD2, energizes the windings 1 and 2 of a relay R5 which closes its contacts 3, energization of a single winding not being sufficient to operate the other relays in the associated row and column. A column hold device CHD2 is then operated to pass reverse current through the windings 2 of the associated column. This is sufficient to hold the operated relay R5 and to prevent operation of any of the other relays in that column. Release is effected when CHD2 is restored by an input on its release terminal. Two relays in the same row can be operated because the release time is longer than the operate time. Modification, Fig. 4. The two windings may be replaced by one 42. The column circuits are unearthed and the row circuits connected to earth through a resistance 45. Reed relays may be used. Second embodiment, Fig. 2. The relays of Fig. 1 are replaced by reversible gas discharge tubes or by a pair of normal diodes connected anode to cathode in parallel. The tubes may carry speech. A positive pulse on one of the row operating devices, say ROD1, and a negative pulse on one of the column operating devices, say COD1, fires the related tube D1. The pulses are followed by a positive potential from column hold device CHD1 which maintains D1 fired but in the reverse direction. Since the release time is less than the firing time two tubes in one row or one column can be fired. Consequently each row can store a number in binary form. In a modification, Fig. 3, a resistance 31 in series with a tube develops a potential for operating other devices.
