Abstract

An unsaturated polyester composition comprises (1) an unsaturated polyester derived from (a) a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol containing 2-7 ether-oxygen atoms, and (b) an a ,b -ethylenically-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, an anhydride thereof or a 1-4 C atom alkyl ester thereof, at least 50 mol. per cent of (b) having the carboxyl groups in the trans position; (2) a monomeric liquid aromatic vinyl compound copolymerizable with (1); (3) a peroxidic catalyst; and (4) a cobalt siccative; (2) being 15-70%, (3) being 0.5-8%, and (4) being 0.05-5%, by weight of (1) and (2). The polyester (1) may also be derived from (c) a dihydric alcohol not falling under (a) in an amount 0.1-1.0 mol. per mol. of (a); and it may also be derived from (d) a carboxylic compound not falling under (b) and which is not copolymerizable with (2) in a amount of up to 25% by weight of total carboxylic acids present. Polyester-forming compounds specified include (a) triethylene, tetraethylene, pentaethylene, hexaethylene, tributylene, tetrabutylene and pentabutylene glycols, the addition products of 2-5 mols. of ethylene or propylene oxide with 1 mol. of propylene glycol, butylene glycol, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol, and the addition products of 2-5 mols. of glycide with methanol, sec.-propanol or a polyhydric alcohol; (b) fumaric and mesaconic as trans acids, and maleic; (c) ethylene, diethylene and 1,3-butylene glycols, 2,2-dimethyl-propane-di-1,3-ol, pentachlorophenyl monoglycerine ether, perhydro-4,41-dihydroxy dimethyl diphenyl methane, and di-(4,41-hydroxy ethyl phenyl)-sulphonic ether; and (d) adipic, phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic, oleic, linoleic and benzoic acids. The polyesters may also be isocyanate modified, e.g. by hexamethylene-, 2 : 4- and 2 : 6-toluylene-, 4,6-dimethyl-1,3-xylene- and 4,41-diphenyl dimethyl methanediisocyanates. Vinyl aromatic compounds (2) specified are styrene, a -methyl styrene, p-methyl styrene, and divinyl benzene. Peroxidic catalysts (3) mentioned are benzoyl, cyclohexanone and cumene peroxides, the cyclohexanone peroxide being used in a dioctyl phthalate paste. Cobalt siccatives (4) mentioned are the naphthenate, oleate, linoleate, maleate, acetate, chloride, bromide and fluoride. Hydroquinone may be added as an inhibitor. Uses.-Non-tacky coatings for glass, metal, plastic, wood, paper or textiles.
