Abstract

821,911. Telegraph or like tape readers. ARNFIELD Ltd., J. & E. Oct. 24, 1957, No. 33312/57. Class 40 (3). A tape reader for perforated tape having a number of code perforation positions spaced across its width, comprises a guide way along which the tape is moved past a reading position, a light-source arranged on one side of the tape and a number of photo-transistors arranged on the other side of the tape, the photo-transistors being mounted in an opaque head having channels extending from one face thereof to the photo-transistors, the axes of the channels being a series of divergent straight lines in the plane of the reading position extending respectively from the light-source through one of the tape perforation positions to the photo-sensitive area of one of the photo-transistors. The tape 1 having perforations 3 as indicated at 5, 6, 7 is fed through a guide way 11 of a base member 10 having a slot 12 opposite the filament 17 of a lamp 16. The photo-transistors 27 are located in cylindrical cavities 28 at the ends of divergent passages 24, whose axes 25 pass through the perforation positions 3 ... 3 on the tape 1. The opaque head 18 is formed with a removable cap portion so that the photo-transistors can be correctly positioned in their cavities 28. The walls of the passages 24 are painted to give a matt black surface or a tarnishing material may provide the non- reflecting surface.
