Abstract
Imidazole derivatives of the formula <FORM:0821627/IV (a)/1> where A is an aromatic nucleus (which may be substituted by halogen, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkoxy) attached by vicinal carbon atoms, R and R1 are hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl, are prepared by condensing aromatic o-diamines (in which one amino group may be mono-substituted) or a salt thereof with thiomalic acid or aspartic acid or functional derivatives thereof. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of an aqueous mineral acid (e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric) and/or an inert solvent. Boric acid may also be present. The groups R and R1 may be introduced later, e.g. by treatment with alkyl halides or dialkyl sulphates. The product is obtained as a mineral acid salt from which the free base is prepared by treatment with alkali. Examples show the production of di - benzimidazyl - ethylene from o-phenylene diamine and di-(N-methyl-benzimidazyl)-ethylene from N-methyl-o-phenylene diamine. Similar products are obtained from 4-methyl, 4-methoxy and 4-chloro-o-phenylene diamines and it is stated that 4-isopropyl-o-phenylene diamine and 1:2-naphthylene diamine may also be used.
