Abstract
821,605. Optical filters. PYE Ltd. Dec. 13, 1955 [Dec. 13. 1954]. No. 35981/54. Classes 97(1) and 98(1) A variable density light filter particularly for use in television cameras consists of two discs or elongated plates mounted one behind the other each element having a density which varies continuously along or around it from a maximum to a minimum value the two elements being so arranged that their densities vary in opposite directions and a drive being provided to move the elements in opposite directions to increase or decrease simultaneously the main density of that part of each element through which the light passes. Fig. 1 shows a portion of a television camera comprising a lens turret plate 16 rotatable on bearings 26, 27, 28 and two graded opacity discs 1, 2 rotatable on a bearing 32 and respectively having gear teeth 5, 6. The discs are arranged as shown in Fig. 2 so that the opacity of one increases in the direction in which the opacity in the other decreases the discs being driven simultaneously in opposite directions by gearing operated by a driving shaft 9 controlled by a potentiometer 21 having microswitches to prevent the dividing line between the opacities of the two discs from entering the lens aperture 17. A gear 18 operated by a spindle 19 adjusts simultaneously the iris diaphragms of the lenses held by the plate 16 as described in Specifications 670,581 and 706,922. Specifications 693,385, 699,104 and 723,872 also are referred to.
