Class 97(1) An eye shield to be worn with a safety helmet comprises a window bearing frame with means for engaging the face and helmet and means for mounting the shield on the helmet; the face engaging means including a flange attached to the frame and extending towards the face and having a resilient flap, part of which engages the face, a first articulation connecting the flange to the frame to allow bending movement of the flange, and a second articulation connecting the flange to the flap to allow bending of the flap with respect to the flange, the flap having a curved cross-section convex on its face engaging side and having its centre of curvature nearer the free end of the flap than the edge connected to the flange, the flap and the flange having substantial flexibility in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the face engaging portion of the flap, and substantial resistance to deformation in a direction parallel to the plane, the mounting means including a first strap means connecting the face engaging portion of the frame to the' helmet and adjustable to, vary the contact pressure upon the face, and second mounting means connecting the helmet engaging portion of the frame to the helmet and adjustable to vary the contact pressure at the helmet, the both mounting means being indepen-. dently adjustable. As shown, the eye shield window 3 is housed in a frame member having upper and lower transverse frame members 4 and 5; the upper member includes a window engaging portion 4a of stiff material hinged at its lower inside edge to a flap 4c which is in turn hinged at 4e to a face engaging flap 4d so as to conform to various face contours as indicated by the broken lines (Fig. 3). The upper edge of the member 4a terminates in a flexible member 4b which engages the surface of the helmet 1. The lower frame member comprises a flange 5c hinged at 5e to a face engaging flap 5d, and side members (not shown) are of similar construction. The eye shield is attached to the helmet 1 by straps 10, 13 independently adjustable by buckles 11 and 14 and attached respectively to studs 7 on the frame members 4 and 5 and a common mounting tab 15 attachable to a mounting stud 16 on the helmet.
