Abstract

<PICT:0820716/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0820716/IV (a)/2> An extrusion die comprises a pair of spaced flatly disposed die lips with a clearance between to form a slit-like orifice, at least one of the lips being flexible and having a plurality of integral independently adjustable projecting arms, each one of which is movable to bend that portion of the lip from which it projects. The die may be linear (Fig. 2) to extrude a sheet or radial (Fig. 1) to extrude a disc which may be stretched by a concentric polygonal film stretcher. The radial die, with extrusion passage 42, comprises two members 26 and 48. The upper member 26, adjustably mounted by shims 31, 32 on a central stud 10, has projecting from its lip 29 adjusting arms 26a entering the annular cavity 18 of a reaction ring 17 and being movable therein by means of screws 53, 56. Similarly, the lower die member 48 is mounted on a cylinder 39 and has projecting from its lip 51 adjusting arms 48a entering the annular cavity 44 of a reaction ring 43 and being movable therein by means of screws 53, 56. Movement of the arms 26a, 48a flexes the lips 29, 51 and adjusts the thickness of the sheet or disc extruded therebetween. The initial setting of the lips 29, 51 may be adjusted by varying the thickness of the shims 31, 32. The dies may be heated by oil circulating in passages 25, 62 or by electrical heaters (not shown).
