Abstract

Metal ions are removed from mineral oils by the use of a chelating resin which has been freed from water, the chelating resin being defined as an insoluble polymeric material containing specific groups such as amino carboxylic acids capable of forming co-valently bound complexes with metallic ions, as distinct from ion exchange resins in which the metal is held by electro-valent linkages. Water is preferably removed from the resin by washing in a series of solvents, the first of which is totally miscible with water and the last is similar to or the same as the mineral oil to be purified. The oil and resin are preferably heated together, e.g. to 60-80 DEG C.
