Abstract

819,899. Optical microscopes. BAKER OF HOLBORN Ltd., C., and CURTIES, M. G. L. April 30, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No. 13190/56. Class 97(1) For effecting several independent adjustments, an optical microscope has a plurality of actuating means each including a manually operable control member, a plurality of such members being arranged in a group or cluster on a panel As shown, the lens tube 14 is attached to a slide member 15 slidably mounted on vertical support 11; a connecting rod 17 rigidly attached to the slide member 15 has its lower end resting on the end 18 of a horizontal lever 19. The other end 22 of the lever 19 carries a cam follower engaging a helical groove 23 in the surface of a driving member 24 located under the front face of the panel 13. Rotation of the knob 28 causes rotation of the driving member 24 and hence vertical motion of the lens tube by means of the cam follower and lever action to provide coarse focusing adjustment. For fine focusing adjustment, a knob 31 is mounted co-axially with the knob 28 and separated therefrom by a ball race 32. The knob 31 carries a shaft 33 engaging on a cylindrical member 34 which projects into a cavity in the driving member 24 and is carried by a fixed base member 35. A spring 36 extends between the cylindrical member 34 and an internal flange 37 on the driving member 24. On rotation of the knob 31, the shaft 33 rotates due to its threaded engagement with the cylindrical member 34 and the spring 36 urges the driving member 24 upwardly with accompanying pivoting of the lever 19 to effect fine focusing adjustment. Similarly, vertical movement of the condenser assembly 37 is effected by a knob 43 operating a lever 39. Horizontal motion of the stage 16 in two independent perpendicular directions is effected by co-axial knobs 64, 56 controlling coaxial cam grooves 51, 61 which-by means of cam followers-cause the motion to the levers 45, 57, the ends 58, 44 of which abut on adjacent edges the stage to move it in the direction of the arrows. All the movable components are ball mounted in a manner described in Specification 819,900. A further knob (not shown) controls a rheostat for variation of intensity of the specimen lighting means. A second embodiment of the invention provides only the coarse and fine focussing adjustment.
