Abstract

<PICT:0819803/III/1> Pulverized solid asphaltite, comprising "Gilsonite" (Registered Trade Mark), glance pitch and grahamite, is mixed with a hydrocarbon liquid such as gas oil, the mixture is passed through a heater maintained at such a temperature that the gases are released from the asphaltite without coke-formation, and the hot mixture is then introduced into a distillation column where gases and vapours are separated from the liquid mixture. Foaming in the column may be inhibited by addition of an antifoam agent into the upper part of the column. The degasified material withdrawn from the base of the column is submitted to cracking, preferably by contact with a bed of hot coke particles. Pulverized gilsonite is introduced continuously into tank 12 where it mixes with the liquid carrier supplied through line 16. A carrier having a boiling range of between 350 DEG and 600 DEG F. is used in the approximate ratio of 1 part (by weight) of carrier to 1 part of gilsonite. If a gas oil having an end-point of 700-900 DEG F. is used, a lower proportion of carrier is necessary. The slurry in tank 12 is maintained at a temperature of approximately 500 DEG F. The slurry is withdrawn from the tank through line 18, and is passed through heating coil 22 which is maintained at about 600 DEG F. in the case of the lower-boiling carrier, or about 770 DEG F. with the heavier carrier. The effluent from the coil is passed to column 26. The vapours and gases leaving the top of the column are passed to condenser 32 and separator 33. Nitrogen, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide are vented from the separator via line 34. The condensate is in part pumped to the top of column 26 as reflux; and the remainder is passed via line 35 to tank 12 for use as solvent for fresh gilsonite. The degasified material withdrawn from the base of column 26 is passed to coker 40, which contains a moving bed of hot coke particles, where it is converted into gas, gasoline, gas oil and coke. The vapours are fractionated in column 44; and the lighter components are passed to condenser 48. Gasoline is collected in tank 49 and gases are withdrawn via line 50. Part of the gasoline may be returned to column 44 as reflux. Gas oil is withdrawn via line 52. Specification 705,637, [Group XII], is referred to.
