Abstract
819,713. Centrifugal separators. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 18, 1956 [April 2, 19561. No. 38527/56. Class 23 [Also in Group XII] In a gas-liquid contact apparatus, the gas is sprayed with the liquid as it passes through a casing, and excess liquid is removed by an eliminator consisting of rotating collecting-plates or blades. In Fig. 1, a fan 7 in the inlet end of a casing 4 impels air past sprays 12, which may be as described in Specification 795,208 [Group XXIX] and through the eliminator 14 to the discharge opening 17. The eliminator comprises radial plates 15 which may be V-shaped or Z-shaped in section, or may be V-shaped with the sharp angle of the V rounded off, or may be like a complete cycle of a sine curve. A V-shaped section may have protuberances, extensions or gutters added to enhance the water-intercepting action. The plates 15 are integral with a frusto-conical member 16 so that water collecting on the plates and moving centrifugally to the member 16, is diverted thereby back into the spraying zone to be removed by the drain 13. The smaller end of the member 16 has an inwardly directed flange which, with outwardly directed spaced flanges on the flange 17 defining the outlet, forms a seal to prevent air from by-passing the eliminator. The blades may be disposed generally in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation, or may have an inclination towards the outlet 17 so that they have a conical disposition. The eliminator is shown as being driven by a motor 19, but the rotation may be derived non-positively by the flow of air through the eliminator. In Fig. 11, the air is drawn through openings 56, 57, by a fan 66 into the space between casings 55, 63 and is treated by a spray produced by admitting water through the pipe 60 into a rotating hub 73 from which it is thrown through holes 75 against vanes 70, 71 carried by stationary rings 68, 69 between which the air flows. The hub 73 is rotated by the motor 72 and carries radial V-sectioned plates 76 which are secured together by spaced rings 79, 80, 81. The outermost ends of the plates 76 are bent back circumferentially to form a surface corresponding to the surface 16 of Fig. 1, and tabs 79 project axially from the plates to produce turbulence and recirculation of the air and spray. The air and waterdroplets are then drawn through the rotating eliminator plates 76 and the air is discharged through the centre casing. A drain 85 is provided. In another modification, the air is drawn into the centre of a centrifugal fan, and water is sprayed on to a disc rotating with and within the fan so that the water is flung outwardly through the blades of the fan against a stationary ring-plate whereby it is atomized and mixed with the air. The mixture passes to an eliminator which is mounted on the same shaft as the fan. Specification 819,714 also is referred to.
