In a zig-zag sewing machine with automatic control of stitch width and stitch field position, the axis 107 about which the needle-bar 109 swings and the loop-taker 128 are laterally displaceable in unison. The control mechanism is arranged in a slidable housing 102 carrying a rod 104 slidably arranged in bearings 105, 106. The needle-bar frame 108 is mounted on the rod for swinging movement about the axis 107. The housing 141 of the loop-taker is mounted for sliding movement in bearings 144, 145 and is coupled by the member 146 to the driving shaft 129 which is mounted for rotational and sliding movement in bearings 133, 134. The shaft 129 and the housing 102 are interconnected by a link 116 carrying a pin 117 located on a guider 118. The link 116 is coupled by a link 120 to a rocking lever 123 actuated by a control cam. 125.
