Abstract

819,349. Magnetic recording &c. apparatus. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd., June 21, 1956 [June 28, 1955] No. 18634/55. Class 40 (2). Magnetic recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprises at least one magnetic recording and/or reproducing head 1 movable towards and away from the surface of a magnetic record member 3 with which the head co-operates, spring means 6 arranged to urge the head towards the member, and a head supporting member 2 provided with at least one bearing surface of a wear-resistant solid material, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, with a low coefficient of friction, which surface is pressed against the record member by the spring means, whereby the head is supported in close proximity to, but out of contact with, the surface of the record member. As shown in Fig. 1, the head 1 is secured in the yoke member 2, the vertical legs of which terminate in shoes 4, 5 provided with a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene, bonded to a metallic backing, which engages the recording member 3 of a magnetic drum; the spring 6 is within a sleeve 7 surrounding the yoke and carried by a rigid arm 8 secured to a fixed part of the apparatus. A group of heads 1, Fig. 2, are supported side by side between the legs 10 of a, yoke 9 pressed by springs 12 on to the member 3, the legs being secured to a member 16 fastened to a block 17 pivotally connected by a pin 18 to a block 19; the latter is pivotally mounted on a rod 20 so that the yoke 9, which pivots about the pin 18, can be lifted off the surface 3 and against the pressure of the springs. The spaces between the block 19 and the end plates 14 may be occupied by sleeves surrounding the rod 20 and interposed washers so that adjustment of the heads 1 relative to predetermined tracks on the surface 3 can be obtained; alternatively, the block and the rod 20 have cooperating screw threads so that accurate adjustment of the head support is obtained by rotation of the rod. According to the Provisional Specification, the recording medium is coated with a sintered magnetic or non-magnetic material to which polytetrafluoroethylene is added.
