Abstract
A flowable heat-curable gum stock comprises: (1) one or more polysiloxanes convertible to the solid elastic state and containing substantially 2 hydrocarbon radicals per Si atom which are methyl, ethyl or phenyl radicals and vinyl, allyl or cyclohexenyl radicals, the unsaturated radicals being present in amount such that from 0.037 to 0.74 per cent of the total Si atoms are bonded therewith; and (2) a dialkyl peroxide as catalyst. Siloxane (1) may be linear or cyclic or a mixture thereof and may contain a small amount of <FORM:0819245/IV (a)/1> units. Catalysts specified are di-tertiary butyl-, tertiary butyl-tri-ethylmethyl- and tertiary butyl tertiary triptyl-peroxides. The gum and filler, e.g. silica, zirconium silicate, diatomaceous earth, calcium carbonate and carbon black may be subjected to a room temperature ageing period or to a precure heat-ageing at 250 DEG to 300 DEG F. before addition of the curing catalyst. After heat curing at 300 DEG F. or above, the products are subjected to a heat-ageing treatment. Examples are given, some of which are comparative, in which the siloxane, filler, catalyst or pre- or post-curing treatment is varied.
