[Also in Groups XXII and XL (b)] A process for producing acoustic impedance material consists in piercing solid material 2 to produce an array of closely-spaced very small holes or slots, Fig. 3, of controlled dimensions by means of a corresponding array of coplanar needle points or chisel edges up to a predetermined cross-sectional area of their taper. The holes or slots are pierced in one or more areas B, Figs. 1 and 2, of reduced thickness in a diaphragm 2 formed within a rim 1 by an array of needles 8, Fig. 9, which have round or square points, or chisel edges and are sweated together in a holder 9; the depth of penetration of the needles may be adjusted by a vernier-controlled punch to provide a measure of the size of the holes or slots. The areas B may be moulded, swaged or die-cast in one or both sides of the metal or plastic diaphragm, or the diaphragm may have clear holes and the areas of reduced thickness provided by a thin sheet of metal, paper, plastic or closely-woven textile, which may be treated by varnishing, styrenating, siliconizing or the like, adhered to its surface.
