Abstract

In a catalytic gas reaction, the catalyst is divided into a major and a separate minor portion, the latter being in a vertical layer traversed horizontally by the gas and being replaceable without disturbing the major portion: the gas is conducted first through the minor and then through the major portion. Preferably, the minor portion is removed and replaced by gravity.
