Abstract

In the production of films by extruding thermoplastic material through an annular orifice of uniform width, inflating the tubular film by introducing into it a gas at superatmospheric pressure, collapsing the film, and thereafter rolling up longitudinally the collapsed or flattened tubular film or flat film cut therefrom, the entire extruder, including the means for melting the plastic and forcing it under pressure to the extruder head, is rotated about the extrusion axis whilst the collapsed film is restrained against rotation, the extent of the rotation of the extruder in one direction before any reversal in the direction of rotation being such that all irregularities in thickness are distributed across the entire width of the rolled final product in successive convolutions thereof. As shown, one end of the extruder 1 is mounted on the circular track 2, wth the other end centred on the pivot bearing 3 and holding the extrusion die head 4 constantly centred above it. The wheels 6 support the outer end of the extruder on the track. The thermoplastic material in particulate form is fed to the extruder through the hopper 8. The motor and other equipment for operating the extruder are enclosed in the housing 9. The drive motor 11, through the speed reduction gear 12, rotates the drive pinion 14 which cooperates with the circular rack 15 on the circular track, causing the pinion to traverse the track and so rotate the entire extruder about the extrusion axis. The direction of rotation of the extruder is reversed after it has rotated <PICT:0818583/IV (a)/1> through nearly 360 degrees by means of a cam which is mounted on the circular rack 15 and actuates a reversing switch. The extruder and its accessories are mounted on the platform 17. The die head includes means (not shown) for inflating the extruded tubular film 22 and thus stretching the film laterally. The tubular film 22 is gradually collapsed by rollers 24 and finally collapsed by rollers 26 urged together by pressure cylinder 25. The collapsed film 32, after leaving the rollers 26, passes over cooling drums 30, supported on the frame 31, which also supports the trimming knives 35 which trim the folded edges from the flattened tubular film with formation of two separate flat films 321, 3211, which are collected on the wind-up rolls 32a, 32b respectively. Alternatively, the collapsed tubular film may be wound directly on the wind-up roll 36 without being trimmed.
