Abstract
818,206. Aerating liquids. WRIGHTWAY ENGINEERING CO. Sept. 4, 1957 [Jan. 15, 1957], No. 27897/57. Class 14 (1). An aerating device for attachment to a water faucet and the like comprises a cylindrical casing 10, Fig. 2, having a plurality of air ports 13 above which is located a disc 22 having apertures 23 from which jets of water impinge on a breakup and mixing mushroom-shaped body 26 which depends from the disc 22. An annular skirt 17 is secured at its lower flanged end to the casing below the ports 13 and extends upwardly above the ports 13 to divert inlet air upwardly towards the disc 22 and thence downwardly between the skirt 17 and body 26 and to prevent splashing of water through the ports 13. On the upper end of the skirt 17 is disposed a washer 18, Figs. 2, 4, having a plurality of scalloped openings 19 around its periphery and a large central aperture 30 through which the body 26 extends and which clears all the apertures 23 in the disc 22 to permit the jets of water to impinge on the downwardly sloping shoulder portion 32 of the body 26. The washer 18 spaces the disc 22 from the top of the skirt 17 so that air drawn in through the ports 13 first rises upwardly, passes over the top of the skirt 17, through the openings 19 and then downwardly to the main break-up and mixing zone 38 between the skirt and shoulder portion 32 of the body 26, as shown in Fig. 2. A portion of the air, however, passes upwardly through a narrow annular orifice between the periphery of the aperture 30 and the shoulder portion 32 to a primary break-up and mixing zone 37. The area of this annular orifice is greater than the total area of the apertures 23 and the minimum annular area between the skirt 17 and body 26 is greater than the area of the orifice whereby water is prevented from filling the two break-up and mixing zones. Further break-up of the mixed stream of water and air is provided by a series of stepped annular shoulders 34 on the inner wall of the lower portion of the casing 10, the shoulders 34 being undercut or re-entrant as opposed to the direction of fluid flow. Specification 800,359 is referred to.
